How to Clean and Disinfect a Pilates Reformer
Care & maintenance · 4 min read
A reformer is an investment — and a shared one in a studio. A quick, consistent cleaning routine keeps it hygienic and makes it last.
Quick answer
Wipe down the carriage, footbar, and shoulder rests after every use with a mild, non-abrasive cleaner. Avoid harsh chemicals on the vinyl, keep the rails clean and dry, and check the springs and straps regularly.
After every session
- Wipe the carriage and headrest. Use a soft cloth with mild soap and water or a manufacturer-approved cleaner. This is where sweat and skin oils collect.
- Wipe the footbar and shoulder rests. High-contact points that get overlooked.
- Dry the rails. Keep them clean and dry so the carriage glides smoothly — never oil them unless the maker says to.
What to avoid
Skip bleach, alcohol-heavy sprays, and abrasive pads on the vinyl upholstery — they dry it out and cause cracking over time. Strong solvents can also degrade the straps and ropes. When in doubt, check your reformer manufacturer's cleaning guidance.
Weekly & monthly
- Inspect the springs for wear, rust, or loss of tension.
- Check straps and ropes for fraying.
- Tighten hardware and confirm the carriage runs smoothly.
The easiest hygiene upgrade
Lay down your own non-slip reformer towel. It keeps sweat and oils off the upholstery in the first place — protecting the machine and giving you a clean barrier between you and a surface dozens of people use.
Protect your reformer
A non-slip towel keeps sweat off the carriage — and you off it.
